Breast Cancer Awareness

When ever any body hears about the word cancer the first thing that will all at once come to his mind is that this disease is fatal and incurable. This is absolute that cancer is such a severe and fatal disease but now it has became curable.Actually cancer it self is a unrestrained growth of abnormal cells in the body.Cancer grows out of normal cells in the body. Normal cells multiply when the body needs them, and die when the body doesn't need them.

Cancer appears to occur when the growth of cells in the body is out of control and cells divide too quickly. It can also occur when cells forget how to die.Cancerous cells are also called malignant cells. Breast cancer is a rapid growth of cells that begins in the tissues of the breast. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Most of these begin in the glandular tissue, though the most common of all breast cancers starts in the ducts.breasts consist mainly of fatty tissue which contains thousands of tiny glands – or lobules, whose function is to produce milk when you have a baby. These lobules form lobes, which lead to the ducts that channel milk to the nipples - enabling you to breastfeed. The dark surrounding area of the nipple, the areola, produces fluid that lubricates nipple when reastfeed. Fatty and connective tissue makes up the rest of your breasts while ligaments and large muscles provide support. Breast tissue extends to upper chest and armpits. It’s quite normal for your breasts to differ slightly in shape and size and vary during your menstrual cycle and pregnancy. They’ll also change as get older. The lobes produce milk which drains into ducts which then drain onto the surface of the nipple. Breast cancer can develop in the cells that line the breast, the lobes and the ducts.

Cancer which is confined to the lobes and ducts is referred to as ‘non-invasive’ because it has not yet developed the ability to spread to other areas of the body. Cancer which has moved into the surrounding breast tissue is referred to as ‘invasive’. Men have small amounts of breast tissue behind their nipples hence the possibility of breast cancer in males.Breast cancer ratio in males is less than women .

According to Cancer research over 44,500 people develop breast cancer each year and of those approximately 300 are men.1 in 9 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and it has become the most common type of cancer. Every woman is at risk for breast cancer. If she lives to be 85, there is a one out of nine chance that she will develop the condition sometime during her life. As a woman ages, her risk of developing breast cancer rises dramatically regardless of her family history.

The breast cancer risk of a 25-year-old woman is only one out of 19,608; by age 45, it is one in 93. In fact, less than 5% of cases are discovered before age 35 and the majority of all breast cancers are found in women over age 50.About 45,000 women die of breast cancer each year, accounting for 16% of deaths caused by cancer in women. However, deaths from breast cancer are declining in recent years, a reflection of earlier diagnosis from screening mammograms and improving therapies.

Developing breast cancer in one breast increases the risk of it developing in the other breast in the future.Breast cancer may be invasive or noninvasive. Invasive means it has spread from the milk duct or lobule to other tissues in the breast. Noninvasive means it has not yet invaded other breast tissue. Noninvasive breast cancer is called in situation.

Many breast cancers are sensitive to the hormone estrogen. This means that estrogen causes the breast cancer tumor to grow. Such cancers have estrogen receptors on the surface of their cells. They are called estrogen receptor-positive cancer or ER-positive cancer. Some women have what's called HER2-positive breast cancer. HER2 refers to a gene that helps cells grow, divide, and repair themselves. When cells (including cancer cells) have too many copies of this gene, they grow faster. Experts think that women with HER2-positive breast cancer have a more aggressive disease and a higher risk that the disease will return (recur) than women who do not have this type. The diagnosis of breast cancer is accomplished by the biopsy of any suspicious lump or mammographic abnormality that has been identified. So it is necessary to examination the size of breast and if lumps will feel so consult to the doctor urgently.
