What are different types of Cancer treatments?

Cancer management is carried out mostly through these treatments. The nature and the type of cancer determine what treatment to be given to the patient.

Cyrosurgery
Also known as cyrotherapy, this surgery involves using extreme cold that is produced by liquid nitrogen or argon gas which helps destroy abnormal tissues. This therapy is used for the treatment of external tumors for example skin cancer. With sterilized cotton swab or spray, liquid nitrogen is directly applied over cancer cells. Internal tumors are also treated with it.

Radiation therapy
It uses high-energy radiation that shrinks the tumors and destroys cancer cells. Radiation is given with:
  • X-rays
  • Gamma rays
  • Radioactive matter
Types of radiation therapy are:
  • Systematic radiation therapy
  • External-beam radiation therapy
  • Internal-radiation therapy (brachytherapy)
Proton Therapy
It is a form of radiation therapy that is newer than other treatments and is incredibly effective according to oncologists. Instead of X-rays of gamma rays, this therapy uses proton beams that are specific in the target unlike other radiations.

Chemotherapy
Anti-cancer drugs that kill cancer cells are used in chemotherapy. Cytoxic drugs that are commonly used in this treatment affect the cells that are dividing fast. This effect takes place in a number of ways, such as by the separation of chromosomes that are newly formed or duplication of DNA. In chemotherapy all cells are targeted, not specifically the cancer cells so it can potentially damage healthy tissues as well which are capable of getting repaired when the chemotherapy sessions are over and the patient has finally recovered.

Biological therapy
This treatment works with the immune system of a cancer patient and helps him fight cancer. It controls side-effects too. In some biological therapies, pills are prescribed; others use IV that is given at the hospital or clinic.

Laser therapy
By using high-intensity light, this treatment is given. It shrinks or destroys the tumor and it given to those who have cancers on body surface or the lining or internal organs. Basal cell skin cancer and the early stages of penile, vulvar, cervical and non-small cell lung cancers are treated with laser.
