Sri Lanka is a conservative country in a subcontinent which follows the Buddhist and there cultural norms are too strong that they just don’t tolerate any kind of discrimination, violence or sexual harassment in their country, and being an Asian country after all these conservatives rules and regulation they still face the rate of sexual #harassment in majority and specially the victims are women.
The women in Sri Lanka are not overpowered and their status in society is that they should stay at home and does the housewife work. They are not welcomed in work areas and they are not respected by the society when they roam around in public. A woman in Sri Lanka lives in fear because the level of sexual harassment in Sri Lanka and even the army of Sri Lanka sometimes get involved in it. Women are scared to walk on roads alone and even they are scared of people who can take revenge any time and the revenge is taken by torturing women or raping them.
Most of the women get to hear sexually exploited comments from people on roads or in buses and sometime they are been snatched from roads and are been raped and then they are been blamed for harassment and harasses is not blamed. Whenever any man sexual harasses a woman on road no one takes any action everyone just watches the act quietly like a shadow and then they leave and nobody gets involved in it.
Women are scared of going to workplaces, because to go from one place to another they have to travel in buses and have to stand on bus stands where they get to see people staring them badly and exposing themselves and passing stupid and abusive remarks, and when they reach their offices they are sexually harassed in their work place in many ways, for example people pass filthy comments or them and not respecting them, giving them no importance and putting sexy pictures in their computer’s screen savers, and sometimes an unwelcome touching and when they resist they are been pushed to it. There are very few women who are proud to work in offices between man’s and are strong to cope up with them, otherwise there are plenty of women who are unconditional and helpless when they get sexually harassed and they have to leave their jobs, because if they don’t leave their jobs they will have to suffer the blames and wrong comments from their colleagues and family.
There are many women who are against sexual harassment and they have started the policies and organization with the government to end sexual harassment, because a woman has the equal right to live their life as man does. So whenever any case of sexual harassment occurs and is filed, that case if investigated very deeply and the punishment is also a big one, sometimes 5 years of jail or sometime in rape cases a sentence of death, but hardly any women talk the truth or tell other that they are being sexually harass because their status and identity is on sake, for them it’s an insult to go through such act so they just keep suffering. It’s very rare that any one complains under the law, and then the social power of man is too much that its only women who has to suffer every time.
