What are different types of Liver cancer?

Liver cancer is of these types:
  1. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
  2. Cholangiocarcinoma or bile duct cancer
  3. Angiosarcoma
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
The cells of this cancer can follow growth patterns that vary. Some of these are spread as tentacle-like form, through the liver. Other forms can start with a single cell tumor that spreads to other parts of the liver later on. Some are in the form of nodules at different places in the liver. About 90% of adult primary liver cancers are of this type.

Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer)
This cancer grows from cells that develop in bile duct of the liver. This duct is actually a thin tube and it joins liver with small intestines. It is present inside liver as several smaller tubes that are joined together. According to an estimate, about 9% of adult primary liver cancers are of this type.

Types of Bile Duct Caner
It has two types, depending upon exact location of the tumor and the type of cell present in this tube.  Any part of bile duct can be affected by cancer. The two types are:
  1. Extrahepatic
  2. Intrahepatic
Extrahepatic is the term that refers to that part of bile duct which is outside of the liver. Cancer usually begins in this area. Over 66% of all bile duct cancers are of extrahepatic type. It can be:
  • Perihilar cancer
  • Distal bile duct cancer
Perihilar Cancer also called Klatskin tumor starts with numerous tiny channels that are joined into the bile duct at the point where it leaves the liver.

Distal bile duct cancer occurs at the opposite end of the tube from perihiliar cancer. The point where bile duct emptied into the small intestines.

Angiosarcoma
This cancer starts in the blood vessels of the liver. It is severe in nature as it can spread very rapidly to other areas of the liver. But it is not a common form of cancer, the statistics are:  about 1% of adult primary cancers.
