Sexual Harassment Description

Sexual Harassment is a sensitive topic, and normally people avoided discussing it. But the reason of not discussing it seems ridiculous, because people often relate it to gender issues. However it is a behavior, it can be different for different people in varied circumstances.

The victim can be any gender; the harasser can be any gender. Also the reasons can also be different for different people even for different cultures. It can happen indirectly, it is not necessary that someone has planned for it. Or it may be the case that the person is unaware that, this act of mine is Sexual harassment for the other.

Once I had read an incident in my course book that an American and Arab officials met together, to show affection the Arab leader moved one step forward, and the American leader moved backward, at the end of the meeting both of them felt offensive, because the Arab felt rudeness in the Americans attitude and American felt harassment.

It is not necessary that harasser can only be the one, who is in power or have some position over the victim because it is a hidden behavior, it is more implied and less expressive.

Harassment is a broader term which covers the concept of intimidation, coercion and bullying. It can be a form of abuse which can be sexual and psychological; also it has different levels from mild to extreme. This can be understood by seeing the act, for example if the case is of intimidation, bullying or coercion of a sexual nature or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors this would be the extreme case, and if it is limited to verbal expression in which these three specific characteristics are excluded then this would be mild. Such an unwelcoming verbal, visual, or physical conduct that is severe or pervasive can adversely affect working conditions or can create hostile working environment.

The easiest way to describe this phenomenon would be that it is any form of unwelcome sexual attention; it has nothing to do with mutual attraction, or friendship between people which is normal and positive. On the other hand harassment includes humiliation and offence to the victim.

So yes, I agree with the reality which says that, this world contains largely two type of creatures, Man and Woman, and when we look more closely in to their matters of dealing where these two parties are interacting either in workplaces, in markets etc., or experience it ourselves, only then we can encounter this phenomena. And I believe this kind of harassment is dependent on culture and more specifically on education. But there is an exception according to me which says that a sick mind with good education can lead to sophisticated sexual harassment. Any ways this would be the next step to analyze the causes and reasons of this harassment. First we have to accept that this phenomenon prevails and its understanding that what actually is it and that the generalized sexual harassment symptoms are not particularly related to a specific aspect i.e. gender, secondly it is working actively in our society only then we can move ahead to cope it.
